harley street scene

In this essay I will discuss how gender is represented in the scene I was shown in a drama called Harley Street. Harlet street follows the story of doctors of a General Practioner's located at Harley Street.

In the first scene, there is a low angle shot of the Doctor in the scene, Dr O. This shows he is the most powerful person in the scene as the camera is below him. Another man is introduced with a low angle shot,Mr Morgan, which suggests he is also another influential male character. The next shot is a high angle tracking shot, which only shows women. This suggests that women are less powerful in this scene as all the shots show men from a low angle and women from a high angle. While Dr O is injecting the women with botox, a younger woman is brought in, who has a much lower angle than all the other women, as she has a much lower angle suggesting less power. When he pretends to inject her with the botox the next shot of holly is a lot higher suggesting she gained influence and power by decieving Mr Morgan.

In the next scene, Dr martha elliot is talking to an older man who seems to be on an equally low angle with her. This suggests that even though all the other women are less powerful in the scenes, but Dr elliot is on an equal angle with the powerful old man. This could be taken to say that the majority of men are more powerful than the women in the scenes but Dr Martha Elliot is more powerful than the other women suggesting some sexual equality in this male dominated programme. In this scene there is also a shot reverse shot which shows the emotions of the old man and Dr elliot. This suggests that her reaction and emotions are important, which shows her as a powerful and influential character. At the end of the two scenes we were shown, the camera zooms in for tension and to maximise emotions on Dr elliot's face. This is another pointer to suggest she is more equal than the other women in this clip.

Mise en scene is also another factor of representing gender in Harley street. In the first scene with Dr O and Mr Morgan and the girls, Dr O and Mr Morgan are both in suits. This represents the fact that the males in this scene are influential, powerful and sexual. However, the women in this scene are dressed in more casual colours and clothes, suggesting more averageness and less power and influence than the males, suggesting the power in this scene is male orientated.

dexter, season 1, episode 1

In dexter, a lot of representation is present. In this essay, I will attempt to prove this.

The main representation of this episode is Gender. In this episode, the men are presented as the hardworking, determined and dominant gender. The captain, main officers and the main character are presented in suits and doing their jobs normally in this episode. However, most of the women in this episode are prostitutes, showing degradation towards women. The two women from the police force are discriminated against, for example, the main characters sister, Debra is a Vice City cop, and she is being forced to disguise herself as a prostitute, which shows lack of power to her and is degrading. The other main woman, Lieutenant Laguerta, is constantly beriddled and critizised about her job as team leader, thus shpwing the male dominant side of this episode.

Race is another main factor. Most of the charachters are predominantly white, but the other ethnic minorities are portrayed in a different way. Misouka, the asian character is portrayed as a comedic, and a perverted man. All the other races are portrayed in bad ways too. Sargeant Doakes is portrayed as Dexters enemy and a corrupt man. The latin characterN Lieutenant laguerta is portrayed as a bad leader of the homicide department. In conclusion of this, race is a representatipon of differentiallity as each ethnic minority shown has a problem it seems.

Age can also be factored in. Dexter is a 30 year old white male, so all the younger cops take notice of his advice, and older people like the Captain and Sargeant Doakes do not take notice of his findings. The main portrayal of age in this is the Captain. He is shown as a more bossy and intelligent man than everyone else, and critisizes the younger cops. Harry Morgan(the vision of dexters foster dad after he is dead) is much older than Dexter and always gives him wise advice. This suggests that age is represented as wisdom.

In this episode, class makes a brief representation. Dexter and the other homicide detectives are much more sophisticated than the lower class, as they are medium upper with high salaries. The lower class, Debra and the prostitutes and other vice cops, are portrayed as more vulgar(indulging in sex a lot and swearing and aggresive attitude), unlike most of the homicide detectives, who are more sophisticated throughout this episode.

Religion does not make and appearance in this episode, so I cannot comment on the representation of this,as it is not part of the episode I have focused on.

analysing 24.

In 24, camera shots are used for a variety of effects. Shots such as the long shot at the start of the clip we watched, shows us where jack bauer and his family are: a forest, and shows the car they are in for details of the scene. Close ups are shown in the chase scene, which are used to show the emotions of his family and give the effect of connecting with the characters. Shot Reverse Shot is used for the scene where the villains are firing at jack and his family, it gives the effect of being able to understand the combat scene, as it shows both sides of the combat returning fire. An extreme long shot is used for the chase again, which is used to show the setting.

Editing is another way to help the scene become more realistic. A short take is used in the action scenes so that you can see what happens as it is usually fast action and you need to see what happens in a blink of an eye, so it switches fast.

editing

The walking dead: the episode I watched, a lot of editing was used. Long edits were used to show the slowness and pace of the scenes when they are in a safe zone. Short edits are used in fast pace scenes when in conflict with zombies, as they are fast. Eyeline matches were used when they spotted the zombies, action matches were used to emphasise the aiming and precision rick bridges used to take out zombies stealthily. Jump cuts are used to get rid of pointless bits such as fish catching etc

Leverage; the episode I watched was comprimised of short edits, constantly as action was compromising the whole episode was full of action. Parallel editing is used for 4 scenes to show two parts of the operation going on, and jump shots are used for pointless scenes here such as eating food. A graphic match is used, from a small replica of the statue of liberty to the actual one to change the country

diagetic and non-diagetic

Scrubs: diagetic sounds are used, when JD is thinking etc and uses the effect so you can relate to the character, and the non- diagetic sounds are effects that emphasise the actions such as them being knocked over which adds to the comedy!
A
Dexter:diagetic sounds are used to show his surroundings as he is trying to be sneaky so emphasises drama, the non diagetic sounds are to represent his 'dark passenger' and alter personality which projects another reality.

media: camera shots and movements

Camera shots:

NCIS: in ncis they use a lot of tracking shots when they are moving around the crime scene, close-ups are used for intimate details and actions, long shots were used to show the scenes once they entered them.

The Office: close ups are used for emotions, long shots are only used outside the office so you can become familiar with the environment, over the shoulder shots are used during conversation.

Camera movements:

Scrubs; the camera movement has a lot of up movements when focusing on dr. Cox as he is more powerful than the others and a down angle on the interns as they are lesser, and some following shots not on tracks are used to folloe them walking round the hospital.

Spooks; the camera moves according to the places of the main characters, down angle shots used on the targets and less important people
